The under 16's made it 4 south titles in a row by defeating Moyle Rovers by 3-11 to 2-08.  Trailing by four points at half time the team showed tremendous character to fight their way back into the game and run out 6 point winners.  Well done to all involved.  (Pics Now In The Gallery In The Juvenile Section Thanks to Eamonn Quirke)

Girl's Beaten By An Excellent Cahir Outfit

Cahir 3-09 Commercials 0-04
Commerial's under 16 girls bravely battled in tonight's county final against an excellent Cahir side but had to succumb in the end.  In a nervous start Cahir settled well and a goal and two points inside the first five minutes set the trend.  Commercials were finding it difficult to stem the wave of attacks from the Cahir attack but slowly the girls found their feet and began to battle their way back.  The defence tightened and the supply to the forwards increased .  Scores were hard to come by and a second Cahir goal late in  the first half left Commercials with an uphill fight.  In a show of tremendous character however Commercials brought the game  to the favourites in the second half and more than matched Cahir in many areas.  Some great displays in the second half from Commercials saw a much more competative game and full credit to the girls for the manner in which they battled and never gave up.  Well done also to Cahir who were deserving winners.  See Pic Gallery in ladies section

The under 16 semi final due for tonight will not now take place after Carrick Swans conceded a walkover.  This is a dissappointment at this stage of the competition.  Commercials now await the winners of Moyle Rovers and Ardfinnan in the 2nd semi-final which will be played tomorrow night.

Mixed Fortunes On A Busy Evening

Picture
14/5/'12
On a busy evening with the club involved in three games at three different locations there were mixed fortunes.  Our under 14's had a great evening with two wins. The "A" team were easy winners against Ballyporeen in Clonmel.  Playing without some of our players due to The Rice Cup final tomorrow the result was never in doubt as we proved way too strong for our opponents.  Our "B" team competing in the "C" championship took on local rivals Clonmel Óg in The Bypass.  Made up of many of the under 12 team Commercials dominated for long periods but a determined effort from Clonmel Óg kept them in the game and having lead by 7 points with just 10 minutes remaining Commercials held on in the end to win by 2.  This was an outstanding result given the age profile of the side and the fact that this is Clonmel Óg's only team in this age group.  Well done to all involved.
Minors Relinquish League Title:  Lining out without 7 county minor players Commercials' county minor league title was lost tonight at the semi-final stage against Golden.  In a poor start Commercials trailed and the concession of two goals proved vital in the end.  Following the concession of a penalty goalie Mickey Boland saved only for referee David Grogan ordered the panalty to be retaken .  The second efford was converted.  In a brave effort by a side that contained many of the under 16 team that only yesterday had a hugely intense South Final Commercials were eventually beaten by a single point.  Well done to everyone on a brave effort.

Big Win for The Seniors

Commercials 2-14  Clonmel Óg 0-04
The seniors maintained their excellent start to the South Championship with a 16 point victory over local rivals Clonmel Óg in Ardfinnan earlier today. Two  goals in two minutes in the first half while playing into a stiff breeze set Commercials up for an easy win.  It took 11 minutes for Commercials to open their acount with an Eamonn Hanrahan point and they never surrendered their lead. Without the services of the Harney brothers, Seamus Kennedy, Ian Barnes and the county mniors this was a steely performances.  The work rate was excellent throughout and this in turn led to good possesion which was more than not well used.  A 21st minute penalty for a foul on Hanrahan was cooly converted by Michael Quinlivan.  Two minutes later and the industrious Richie Carroll  pounced to score his side's second goal in as many minutes.  The game was effectively over as a contest even at this early stage as Clonmel Óg struggled to make an impact.  Eight points seperated the sides at the break and although no more goals came Commercials were always well in control and with the workrate maintained they pushed on to double their half time lead by the final whistle.
Team: Paul Nolan, Shane Taylor, Ciarán Ó Connell, Fergal Condon, Danny Madigan, Donal Lynch, Stephen Buckley, Eamonn Hanrahan, Conor Walsh, Luke Moore, Fergal O Callaghan, Richie Carroll, Shane Power, Michael Quinlivan, Brian O'Hara:  Subs Used: Niall Kelly, Shane Lonergan, Brian Walsh,

Website Brings Enquiry Of Past Player.

Picture
Recently I received an enquiry from Bob Cerovsky in The United States regarding a player called Bill Barrett who played for Clonmel Shamrocks / Clonmel Commercials in the early years of the last century.  A little research  unvailed some of Bill Barretts playing history. Having replied to Bob I decided to publish   the following which is a brief look at Bill's intercounty career. It is great that the site is of use to people with links to the GAA in town going back so long.
Bill Barrett first played championship football for Tipperary as a Clonmel Shamrocks player in 1901. Having beaten Waterford in Cork on a score line of 7-12 to no score (such scoring patterns were common in those days)  Tipperary gave Cork a walk over in The Munster semi-final.  In 1902 Bill Barrett and Tipperary won the Munster championship.  They defeated Limerick in Cork in the semi-final. For some reason the Munster final of 1902 was not played until October 1903.  Again this was common in those days that a championship would not be played in the one calendar year.  In the final, played in turner’s Cross in Cork City (now Pairc Uí Rinn) Tipperary and Kerry drew 1-04 each.  The replay at the same venue on Nov 1st saw Tipperary win by a single point. In the All Ireland series Tipperary beat Galway in the semi final played in Athenry before losing narrowly to Dublin in The All  Ireland final.  That final was played in Kilkenny.

This was to be Bill’s only appearance in an All Ireland final and indeed for some reason he didn’t feature in a Tipperary team again until 1909.  Limerick beat Tipperary in their only championship outing of 1909.  The following year Bill Barrett lined out with Tipperary for the only time as a Clonmel Commercials player. This appearance was against Cork in Dungarvan and would end in a defeat by 2-10 to 3 points.  Other Commercials players on the panel that day were ; PJ Condon, Jack Dillon, Matt Moroney, Jim Kenny and Tom Myles.
